The beds are ready

After talking to Dana, talking to my mom, and searching the web, we decided to move these bed things that we have around the yard into the sun and then use those. Dana said that I can use the dirt that is in them and mix in a ton of compost and that should be fine. (Right Dana? If I am wrong, let me know.)

They are 2' 8" x 2' 6", so I will have to either cut them down or just plant the 2 x 2 square and leave the extra for herbs or something. There are seven of them, so I think I will start with four. I might end up doing a 4 x 4 or a 1 x 4 trench in the ground just to see which I like best. One of the boxes is filled with this thing:

I have no idea what it is, but it is taking over the yard so I think we are going to take it out.

So yesterday we set out to move them. And by we, of course I mean the boys. I made a great supervisor.

After reading this I decided to add cardboard to the bottom of the beds. I am hoping that the cardboard will choke out the grass and help hold moisture. We will see.

After I took Marty to work I headed to our city compost pile. I really wish I had taken a camera. This pile was huge. Gorgeous black dirt just waiting to come home with me. I took 2 - 32 gallon containers full home with me, and will probably head back there today for more.

Before we could get any further, the thunderstorms started. The 94° temp was making it hard to think straight, anyway. At least the cardboard is now soaked.

Today's plan is to sift the compost and dirt and get the beds filled. We also need to get the trench built, but I really think we should wait until Monday when it will only be 85°. I haven't had one person take me up on my offer of taking extra plants off of their hands, so I guess I am heading to the greenhouse today.

What is it with the gardeners in this town? All I hear about it gardeners with so many seedlings they are giving them away, so many zucchini that they dump them on the doorstep of unsuspecting neighbors, etc. Not this town. Just try getting people to part with their stuff. I don't get it. Really, I don't.
